Why Doors Come Off Their Tracks
The usual causes are a car nudging the door, a broken roller, a snapped cable or track brackets that have worked loose over time.
An off-track door is under uneven tension and can shift without warning, so it should not be forced up or down by hand.
How to Tell
Rollers outside the track
You can see one or more rollers sitting outside the metal channel.
Door tilted or bowed
Sections twist or bulge where the door left the track.
Track bent or dented
A visible kink stops the rollers from running smoothly.
Opener will not move it
The opener stops or reverses because the door is binding.
How We Put It Right
- 1
Make it safe
The door is clamped and spring tension released if needed.
- 2
Fix the track
Bent sections are straightened or replaced and brackets re-secured.
- 3
Rehang the door
Rollers go back in the track, damaged ones replaced.
- 4
Check everything
Cables, balance and the opener are tested with the door back in place.
Off-Track Questions
What should I do if my door comes off the track?
Stop using it, unplug the opener and keep people and cars clear. Then call. Trying to push it back can twist panels or release a cable.
Will the door need replacing?
Usually not. Most off-track doors need new rollers or a track section, not a new door.
