Two Thin Cables, a Lot of Weight
Lift cables connect the bottom corners of the door to the springs. They take the full load every time the door moves, and in salt air they rust from the inside out.
A cable that slips off its drum leaves the door hanging crooked. One that snaps can drop a corner hard. Both are jobs for a technician.
When Cables Need Attention
Door sits crooked
One side is lower than the other when the door is closed or half open.
Loose cable hanging
A slack cable near the bottom bracket has usually come off its drum.
Frayed or rusty strands
Broken wires along the cable mean it is close to failing.
Door jams partway
A crooked door binds in the track and stops.
How Cable Repairs Are Done
- 1
Secure the door
We clamp the door so it cannot move while the tension is off.
- 2
Release the springs
Spring tension is unwound safely before cables are touched.
- 3
Fit new cables
Both cables are replaced and wound evenly on the drums.
- 4
Level and test
Tension is reset and the door is checked for level travel.
Cable Questions
Can I still open the door with a broken cable?
Please do not. A door with one cable can twist out of the track or fall. Keep it closed and call.
Why replace both cables if only one failed?
They are the same age and see the same wear, so the second one is usually close behind. A matched pair also keeps the door level.
